Landfill Liner Material

Containment for Landfills

Question: I am looking for landfill liner material. I am working on a project that requires containment for a landfill. The specs say 36 mil. Do you have a liner with this thickness for the application I have described?

landfill liner materialAnswer: For lining landfills and other containment areas, there are several different material options you could consider, all with a thickness of 36 mil. Choosing between these containment liners can depend on several different factors, but might include budgetary options, outdoor conditions, and the type of liquid or material trying to be contained. Different options can include liners with extended UV resistance, low crack temperatures, and hydrocarbon stable.

Landfill Liner Material Options:

For your specified spec of a 36 mil option, there are four different listed fabrics you can choose between. Please feel free to check out the technical specifications for these materials to help you choose the right fabric for your location. Fabrics include:

  • HDPE (High Density Polyethylene)
  • Elvaloy® (Tripolymer Alloy Material)
  • PPL (Polyethylene)
  • PP (Polypropylene)

When looking for the right containment liner, it is always helpful to consider your specific site and problems that may occur. Most material options for liners will consist of some type of plastic material, such as a polyethylene or HDPE fabric. These liners are often very high in chemical resistance and have a low level of permeability to successfully contain leachate and other liquids.

Differences Between Landfill Liner Materials:

Containment liners can also be chosen based on the type of leachate or liquid you are trying to contain. For instance, if you know that your landfill area will require containment of materials such as hydrocarbons, liners with these resistances can be made available.

polypropylene linerIf you do have specific liquid or chemical you need to contain, please let us know. Regardless of what secondary containment you are using, one of the first questions we ask our customers is "What are you trying to contain?". Knowing the specific liquid and/or volatility of the liquid helps us choose the material most compatible with your liquid.

Liners have been known to help contain:

  • Hydrocarbons/Oil
  • Chemicals
  • Polluted Water
  • Leachate

Liners are available in thicknesses up to 60 mil. Please feel free to check out our full variety on our Secondary Containment Liner Page to find the perfect landfill liner material for your location. Other liner materials may also be available, so please don't hesitate to ask.
